Why iPhone’s Don’t Need Anti-Virus Software

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is, do I need to download an Anti-Virus app for my iPhone? If so which one and why? The answer 99.9 percent of the time is no, you do not need an anti-virus app for your iPhone or iPad. The .1 percentage of the time you would need it is if you decided to “jail break” your iPhone, meaning, download a third party’s version of iOS.

Apple has designed iOS with security first and foremost in importance.

Many companies do offer “security” apps for your iPhone/iPad, these apps do NOT help with viruses.

Why iPhone’s don’t need Anti-Virus software.

Without getting to technical, in order for viruses to “infect” your device, they need “hooks” into the OS.  Likewise anti-virus software also needs “hooks” into the operating system (in Apple’s case iOS) to protect from viruses.  This is where iOS stands out vs. Android.  Apple does not allow “hooks” thereby almost eliminating viruses from the get go.   Now, nothing is 100%, but Apple makes it almost impossible for apps to get their “hooks” into iOS, if you keep your iPhone/iPad up to date.

On the other hand, Android OS gives apps far more access or “hooks” into the operating system(s), which is why it important if you have an android to have anti-virus software.

So to answer the question of “does my iPhone/iPad require anti-virus software?  No, if you keep it up to date and don’t jailbreak it.
